MCT SJH PETITION DRIVE 07.JPG
16 Jan. 2012 -- ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis resident Mike Basler (left) signs petitions offered by Rachel Cramsey, also of St. Louis, before an event at the Old Federal Courthouse in St. Louis in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday, Jan. 16, 2012. Cramsey was part of a group of volunteers circulating two petitions, one calling for reform of payday lending practices in Missouri and another calling for an increase in the state's minimum wage. According to Lara Granich, director of the local group Jobs for Justice, the St. Louis group circulating petitions that day included volunteers from local unions, Jobs for Justice and Metropolitan Congregations United. Other groups involved in the state-wide petition effort include Communities Creating Opportunities in Kansas City and GRO (Grass Roots Organizing) in central Missouri. The petition drive was held near the Old Federal Courthouse, where the Dred Scott case that declared slaves property, was originally heard in 1854. Photo © copyright 2012 Sid Hastings.
